At Poppy & Bean, product safety is important. This Policy explains safety information for our vintage apparel products, as well as care, recalls, and product safety communications.

1. General Product Safety

Customers should read and follow all product information, warnings, care labels, and safety information provided with the product. Please note that vintage garments may not always retain their original care labels. Where original labels are missing, we will provide our recommended care instructions based on the garment's era, fabric type, and construction.

Our vintage garments are intended for everyday wear and should be used only for their intended purpose. Do not modify, alter, or misuse garments in any way that could compromise safety or product integrity. Alterations to vintage pieces should only be performed by a tailor or seamstress experienced with vintage construction and delicate fabrics.

2. Fabric Safety and Flammability

Due to the age and nature of vintage textiles, certain fabrics used in our garments may be more sensitive to heat or open flame than modern fabrics. Keep all garments away from open flames, fire, candles, and direct heat sources. Follow care instructions regarding ironing temperatures and drying methods to prevent fabric damage, scorching, or fire risk. Older fabrics, particularly silks, rayons, and early synthetics, may require extra caution when exposed to heat.

3. Decorative Elements and Small Parts

Some of our vintage garments feature buttons, beads, sequins, rhinestones, zippers, metal fasteners, brooches, or decorative hardware that may be original to the piece and decades old. Please be aware that these components may be delicate or become detached with wear. Exercise appropriate care, and periodically inspect decorative elements for looseness or wear. Keep small parts away from young children.

4. Drawstrings, Tassels, Sashes, Belts, and Ties

Vintage dresses and garments with sashes, waist ties, belts, bows, or similar features may present an entanglement risk. Exercise caution when wearing such garments near machinery, escalators, moving equipment, or in any situation where loose elements could become caught. Some vintage belts and sashes may be original to the garment and require gentle handling.

5. Fit, Sizing, and Tripping Hazards

Vintage sizing differs significantly from modern sizing standards. Please consult the measurements provided in each product listing and our size guide to select the correct fit. Do not rely on the labeled size alone, as a vintage size 12 may correspond to a modern size 6 or 8, depending on the era.

Longer-length styles, including vintage maxi dresses, midi skirts, and full-length gowns, may pose a tripping hazard, particularly on stairs, escalators, or uneven surfaces. Exercise caution when walking in floor-length or full-skirted vintage garments.

6. Allergies and Skin Sensitivity

Some individuals may experience skin sensitivity to certain vintage fabrics, dyes, metal fasteners such as zippers, hooks, or buttons, or finishes used in our garments. Older metal components may contain nickel or other materials that can cause reactions in sensitive individuals. If you have known allergies or skin sensitivities, please review product descriptions and fiber content information carefully before purchase. Discontinue use and consult a medical professional if skin irritation occurs.

We recommend gently cleaning vintage garments before first wear, following the care instructions provided.

7. Product Care

Follow all care instructions provided with your garment. Many vintage pieces require special care due to their age, delicate fabrics, and historical construction methods. Unless otherwise noted, we generally recommend:

Hand washing in cool water with a gentle detergent for most washable vintage fabrics
Professional dry cleaning by a cleaner experienced with vintage textiles for structured garments, silks, wools, and pieces with embellishments
Air drying flat or on a padded hanger away from direct sunlight
Storing garments in a cool, dry place away from direct light, preferably on padded hangers or folded in acid-free tissue

Improper washing, drying, ironing, or cleaning may cause fabric damage, shrinkage, color bleeding, deterioration, or damage to decorative elements such as beading, embroidery, sequins, or appliqués. Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals, bleach, or excessive heat. Do not machine wash unless explicitly stated in the care instructions.

8. Product Recalls and Safety Notices

If we become aware of a product recall, safety notice, or corrective action affecting a product sold by us, we may contact affected customers using the contact information provided at the time of purchase. We may also provide instructions regarding repair, replacement, refund, disposal, or other corrective action.
